So you’ve decided to come to dance class. Now what? Whether you’re stepping into the studio for the first time or heading back for another year, the right equipment can make all the difference. From comfortable, breathable fabrics to shoes that support your style of dance, choosing the right dancewear helps you move with confidence, stay comfortable, and focus on having fun. Ready to learn more? Here’s everything you need to know about what to wear to dance class—and why it matters!
Why is there a Dress Code?
At Turning Pointe Dance, our mission and vision statements play out in the ways we differentiate ourselves from the surrounding dance culture. That’s what sets us apart as a Gospel-centered studio! For performances, we carefully choose costumes that are age appropriate, beautiful but appropriately modest, and our commitment to those principles is carried over into each and every class. In addition to promoting appropriate modesty, our dress code unifies us as a studio, and keeps expectations consistent across the board.
Enforcing appropriate dress codes also helps to ensure the safety of students. How? Proper shoes and dancewear prevent slipping, tripping on baggy clothes, or injuries from dangling jewelry. Tying hair back keeps vision clear and prevents hair from catching on partners or equipment. And fitted dancewear lets instructors clearly see a dancer’s spine, hip alignment, muscle engagement, and posture to give accurate correction and feedback, ensuring each student is progressing through difficult skills in a safe and healthy way.
Is the Dress Code the same in every class?
Just like different sports demand different equipment, different genres of dance require specific gear. Ballet requires leather or suede-bottom shoes for quick turns and proper foot articulation, while jazz classes use a more structured heel/sole for the impact of sharp movement. Pointe and classical ballet classes warrant fitted leotards and tights to modestly show controlled alignment, while hip-hop allows looser pants for floor work and heavy movement.
At Turning Pointe Dance, there are a handful of overall guidelines that apply to every class, like no dangling jewelry, no short-shorts, and street shoes/modest coverups when entering and leaving the building. We also use different colored leotards to celebrate different development levels, and provide clear guidance on genre-specific requirements. Which brings us our next question…
What should I wear to my dance class?
Ready to get started? All of our dress code requirements and guidelines can be found here! Have a question? We’re here to help! If you’re unsure about the size, fit, or required garments, check the website, send us a text or an email, or ask a teacher or staff member the next time you’re at the studio. We’re always happy to help!
The good news is, you don’t have to have a full ensemble on day one. If you’re joining us for a free trial or bring-a-friend week, you’re free to wear anything you can move comfortably in, with either socks or bare feet. If you absolutely love it and register for a class, we can help get you set up from there—from local dancewear boutiques to great online ordering options and our very own Adorn Dancewear. Our teachers and staff can even help provide guidance on proper sizing and fit so your dancer looks and feels their best!
Investing in the right dancewear honors your craft, protects your body, and shows respect to your studio and instructors. When you look good, you feel good! And when you feel good, you gain the freedom to move with absolute confidence, like David, dancing before the Lord with all his might. So step onto the studio floor fully prepared—because when you look and feel like a dancer, your performance will naturally follow.
